The J. García Carrión Case: How to Automate Inbound and Outbound Processes in the Plant

J. García Carrión is a Spanish multinational business group founded by the García-Carrión family in 1890.

The company manages the entire value chain, from raw material selection to final distribution, allowing it to maintain high standards of quality and efficiency.

In addition to its strong presence in the juice, nectar, and plant-based beverage market, J. García Carrión is also one of the largest wine producers and exporters in Europe, with wineries in Spain’s main denominations of origin.

Its approach combines tradition, technological innovation, and sustainability to meet the evolving demands of the global market.

Integrate, automate, and optimize

The challenge was to improve efficiency and control in the inbound and outbound carrier processes, optimizing time at the plant and increasing overall process monitoring.

Analyze and improve processes

First, an initial analysis and design phase was carried out in collaboration with García Carrión to develop a new solution at the Huelva plant. This process includes the following steps:

  • Customized adaptation of the logistics area front-end in SAP S/4Hana to support the entire new process.
  • Definition of the target inbound and outbound process.
  • Design of an IoT-based solution including sensors for transport identification, automatic barrier opening, traffic light signaling, and automatic weight reading on scales, among other functionalities.

Once this process was completed, the hardware was deployed, including elements such as cameras, barriers, and traffic lights, as well as the development and deployment of the new solution using Google IoT Cloud and SAP S/4Hana at the Huelva plant.

Finally, once implemented, the process is reviewed and adapted at each of the group’s nine plants/warehouses, working closely with Plant Management to achieve full process automation.

Automation and efficiency

Thanks to this solution, J. García Carrión has significantly reduced the time carriers spend at the plant and eliminated manual tasks, increasing process efficiency. In addition, safety, control, and monitoring of access and processes have improved, leading to a reduction in fraud and errors. Finally, communication between carriers and transport managers has been automated, streamlining their work and enhancing communication efficiency.
