The role of 5G in vertical industries

5G technology is not only a next-generation mobile network, but also the enabler of other technologies that will drive new business models. In this report, we show how 5G will contribute to the digital transformation of many vertical industries such as Factories of the future, Media and Entertainment, eHealth or Energy, among others, which will undoubtedly represent an opportunity for both operators and the industry in general.

The first commercial deployments of 5G began in 2018, but it will be from 2021 onwards when they will truly reach a large share of the population

5G will allow the development of new services thanks to its three-network configurations:

• Improved broadband that enables stable mobile connections with very high peak data rates in densely populated areas, both indoors and outdoors. Its possible applications are those related to contents, training and mobility.
• Critical services based on quality of service and guaranteed latency used in sensitive applications that require latencies of less than one millisecond and network availability up to 99.999%.

• Massive deployment of low-consumption connected devices that offers the possibility of their implementation in smart homes and infrastructures, since the devices are only sporadically active and send small amounts of data.
