José A. Sanz Moreno

Professor of Constitutional Law at UCM

Professor of Constitutional Law, attached to the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, and professor and researcher since 1998.

With more than twenty years of university teaching experience in different degrees, he is an expert in the work of Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt, including the monograph Legal Order and the Post-Liberal State: Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt (2002) and the article "Parliamentarianism at its Crossroads: Schmitt versus Kelsen, or the Vindication of the Value of Democracy" (Revista de Estudios Políticos, 2013).

From an attentive look at the universe of new digital technologies and the power of social networks, his latest research concerns are with the explosion of populisms as new 'political theologies' and their dangers for a constitutional democracy understood as inviolable.

On these investigations, we highlight the following publications: "Sobre la redención populista y la fuerza constitucional: el valor intangible de la democracia", Revista de Estudios Políticos, 183, 2019; "The Myth of Ontological Foundations and the Secession Clause as Federal Answers to National Claims of External Self-Determination", in LÓPEZ-BASAGUREN, A., ESCAJEDO, L., Claims for Secession and Federalism, New York, Springer, 2019; "Populist Push on the Constitutional Rule of Law: Sovereignty (Unlimited) or Democracy (Intangible)", Politics and Society, 56(2), 2019; and "Populist Theologies versus Democratic Constitutionalism, or the Pedagogy of Democracy and its Limits", Journal of the General Courts, 107, 2019, some freely available on the web.
