AI applied to elections

For this project RTVE relies on Narration technology and experience. From the data provided by official information sources, its Artificial Intelligence technology is capable of interpreting and transforming them into a news item related to electoral information. The text, which must be a news item with a logical narration, which reports correctly and is in accordance with RTVE's style requirements, is accompanied in its digital publication with images, graphics and, if any, TVE or RNE's own audiovisual contents. The objective, as a public service, is to guarantee that nobody is left without the right or access to information, in this case on such an important issue as the voting and the results of the elections which shape the different institutions which run the country, from the local to the national or European level. For this reason, we are also working on the emulation or generation of synthetic voices that "read" the texts to make the information content accessible to people with disabilities or to be heard on smart devices.

In the first phase, we define what and how we want to achieve and in what form we want to publish the content and in what way. Several real tests are planned, such as the one carried out at the CAM, before the tool is considered to have been fine-tuned for the 2023 elections. The information and the content dealt with are not, in terms of quantity and detail, those which are usually covered by RTVE's information professionals. Now it will be able to be generated in a matter of minutes, improving the quantity and quality of RTVE information dedicated to the elections. The writing of texts is an essential part of RTVE, which has a team of about 1,800 journalists who write thousands of news for television, radio and Digital every week. The emergence and development of new tools that facilitate this text writing and its application to the news field is, therefore, especially relevant for a company like ours. This project allows us to cover information that, until now, was impossible for us. In addition to fulfilling our public service mandate, we have the possibility of learning, experimenting and training throughout its development. The fact that a final design customized by and for RTVE is being considered is an initiative that puts us on the map, makes us visible, both at Spanish and European level. It also shows RTVE's interest in researching, improving, evolving and adapting to the future environment. This innovative project aims at positioning the Corporation as a pioneer public media at the service of the citizens.
